MGLS:2017 will follow a nationally representative cohort of sixth grade students as they enter and move through the middle grades. The study aims to provide data on the development and learning that occur during students’ middle-grade years (grades 6–8) and that are predictive of future success, along with the individual, social, and contextual factors that are related to successful development. The MGLS:2017 main study, which is scheduled to begin in late January 2018, will include about 20,000 sixth grade students in about 800 schools nationwide. Two field tests designed to evaluate the instruments and procedures will be conducted in 2016 and 2017 in preparation for the national study.
